Baseball tournaments are won with a series of victories and defeats. Unfortunately for the Marion County All-Star baseball teams, their seasons did not end with either taking the District 5 tournament at Idle Hour Park in Springfield.

Though they did not come out on top, the 11-12-year-old All-Star team did finish as the runner-up in the tournament when they fell to Campbellsville, 12-0, on July 4.

Coach Steve Hayes said the team showed a lot of persistence.

“I couldn’t be more proud,” Hayes said.

After losing their first game against Campbellsville, 5-4, Marion County earned its way back to the top by defeating Adair County, 19-1, then South Hardin 6-4, then Glasgow, 9-5 and finally Washington County, 11-8.

“We had a long, hard road,” Hayes said. “And had to battle back just to get there.”

After their win over Glasgow, Hayes was feeling good.

“We just got to keep focused one day at a time because we pretty much gave away the first game against Campbellsville but we battled back,” he said after that game.

9-10 team

Marion County’s 9-10-year-old all-star baseball team also fell in the tournament. Despite their season coming to a close, the team showed that they are anything but losers.

Their coaches, family members and fans gathered around them after their game against Russell County on July 2 and gave them a round of applause.

“We came out strong,” Coach Brian Pirkle said after their final game.

Marion County got off to a blistering hot start in its game against Russell County, scoring nine runs in the first inning. Unfortunately for them, that wouldn’t be enough. Despite their efforts, they could not keep Russell County from scoring.

The 9-10 team ended its run in the tournament with a 17-9 loss.
