Many Marion County AT&T customers are likely aware that 3G service is now available locally. The service was launched last week in Lebanon.

“We have completed it,” said Cathy Lewandowski, a senior public relations manager for AT&T. “I do have confirmation from our network engineers.”

She added that AT&T has completed more than $600 million in upgrades to its wireless network in Kentucky. She also noted that the installation of 3G in needed in order to later extend AT&T’s 4G LTE network into Marion County.

“We are preparing the network for 4G,” Lewandowski said. “We just have not launched that yet.”

She did not say when 4G would be launched in Marion County, but she did say that AT&T would continue its expansion of 4G in Kentucky in 2013.

Bluegrass Cellular has been offering 3G service in Marion County since the beginning of 2012, and Bluegrass has also started its own 4G expansion.

On Nov. 5, Bluegrass Cellular announced that Bowling Green, Elizabethtown, Glasgow, Radcliff and Bardstown would be the first communities to become part of its 4G LTE network. More communities will be added throughout 2013.
