I have a friend who gave up chocolate for Lent, so I wanted to make something chocolate and yummy for him after Easter.

I came up with this Chocolate Surprise Cake, and it turned out even better than I thought it would.

It's very easy, uses a jazzed-up cake mix and a few other ingredients to make a beautiful shiny cake with a cream cheesy chocolate chip center.

It's quite rich as is, and icing is not really necessary, but you could add icing if you wanted to. Chocoholics take note: you should save this recipe. If you try it, you'll make it again and again. Enjoy!

Chocolate Surprise Cake

1 chocolate or devil's food cake mix

1 1/4 c. water

3 eggs

1/3 c. vegetable oil or melted butter

1/4 c. Hershey's chocolate syrup (the kind in a can

1 (8-oz.) package cream cheese, softened

1/3 c. sugar

Dash salt

1 egg

1 (6-oz.) package milk chocolate chips

Mix together cake mix, water, 3 eggs, oil or butter and Hershey's syrup. Beat well. In another bowl, mix cream cheese, sugar, salt and egg. Mix well, then add chocolate chips. Put cake batter in greased 9X13 or 10X14 shallow pan. Distribute small spoonfuls of cream cheese mixture evenly over dough. Bake at 350 degrees for 35-40 minutes or till done. (Can also be made into filled cupcakes: fill paper cupcake holders in muffin pan 1/3 full of cake batter, then put a spoonful of cream cheese mixture on top of each one. Bake at 350 degrees for 20-25 minutes.)
