It is the season for thankfulness but I often wonder why we need a season or holiday to remind us about all the good things we have?
We have so much more in this country than most of the rest of the world but yet we need to be reminded of it on a yearly basis. Is it that we are spoiled?
Or, is it that we work so hard year round to get the things that we are continually told we need.
Or, is it that our neighbors have something we think we need?
Or, is it that we live such fast paced lives that we don’t have time or even take time to enjoy life so we can be thankful?
It is probably a little of everything but the most important thing to be thankful for is family.
I don’t care how much money you have, how many worldly possessions you have, or even if you live on the beach in Maui with year round sunshine, there is no happiness without family. I am not saying family is only blood relatives either.
Family is a group of people in your life that makes your life fulfilling and better. It might be your mother, father, grandparents, wife, children, or anybody in your life that makes you feel better about yourself.
It might even be your best friend, neighbor, or even the mail person that says hi to you, or even the little old lady that asks you to come over and change a light bulb every now and then.
We as Americans have been told for a long time that we need to work hard and play hard.
Well, we also need to love hard. That sounds corny but without family and relationships what’s the point in working hard and playing hard?
We need to be thankful everyday not just once a year on Thanksgiving.
I am thankful for my family and friends and hope that you are too. Tell them that you love them and that you are glad they are who they are. You can never tell someone you appreciate them and love them too much, trust me. Make a point everyday not just this week to be thankful for something or somebody. You will make someone’s day brighter and it might just make yours as well.
Recently, and I mean like last week, we now have a Washington County Horticulture facebook page. This will allow broader access for updates and timely tips for you gardeners out there. I will post as often as I can tidbits of horticulture happenings in the office, classes, etc.
Facebook for those that are familiar with it is free so sign up today! Go to your facebook page and search for Washington County Horticulture and hit like.
If you need help doing this give me a call or stop by the office, we can help you set up a facebook account or show you how to join us on facebook.
Also, I am certain that if you stop by the Marion or Washington County public libraries, they will help you as well....I have connections at those places you know.
For those that like to attend my gardening classes this will be very helpful for you as reminders for class times and meetings! This is also true for any programs or organizations I am involved with.
Call or email me at (859) 336-7741 or dennis.morgeson@uky.edu for information. Of course, you can stop by the office as well.
Happy Thanksgiving!
