Feb. 22, 1980: The day the United States Olympic hockey team did the unthinkable. Few thought it could be done. The United States, young, inexperienced, untested, was no match for the talented, powerful, battle-tested Soviet Union squad, they said. The American squad, however, had shocked all the pundits, critics, and detractors with their gutsy and determined play. They had been the surprise of the 1980 Olympics, tying with a talented Swedish squad before rattling off four straight wins en route to their clash with the Soviet Union.
