After the Marion County Marching Knights concluded their season Saturday, band director Curtis Bennett sounded pleased.
"We're one of the smallest bands in our class," he said. "Fortunately, we don't play like a small band."
Marion County finished 13th in the AAAA semifinals at Barren County High School. Marion County received a score of 72.55.
The top four bands in the semifinals - Madisonville North Hopkins (88.85), Grant County (86.25), John Hardin (83.9) and Anderson County (83.85) - advanced to the state finals Saturday evening in Bowling Green.
Marion County senior drum major Elyssa Holt said the band has put a lot of work into learning their performance piece, which is titled "Visionary."
"What I saw was really good," Holt said following Saturday's semifinal run.
Marquan Newby, a senior percussionist, agreed that the Marching Knights played well on Saturday.
"We just sounded like more of a band," Newby said.
Holt pointed out that the band has been consistent with its music throughout the season, and that allowed them to add some new visual elements in the week prior to the semifinals.
Bennett agreed, but gave the credit to the band members.
"A big part of that is student leadership," he said.
There was a glitch with some of the electronics that were part of the performance, but Bennett said the students took it in stride.
"It didn't affect them at all," he said. "They were dead on."
