Two activities this Sunday, Feb. 23, will honor black history in Marion County.
At 2 p.m. Sunday, the Marion County chapter of the NAACP will be hosting its annual Black History Celebration.
Local NAACP President Jerry Evans said Rev. Dale Smith will present a narrative describing the church bombing that occurred in 1963 in Birmingham, Ala., during the civil rights movement.
Youth groups from Holy Rosary Church, under the direction of Tyrone Burton and Marquita Mattingly, will perform, as will the step team from the Marion County Youth Center.
After the conclusion of the NAACP celebration, the Marion County Heritage Center will hold the grand opening of its new Marion County black history exhibit. Evans said a ribbon cutting will be held and light refreshments will be served.
Everyone is welcome and encouraged to attend both events.
