After looking like a region contender last season, the Marion County High School boys golf team fell victim to tough conditions at the region to finish short of their goal of going to state. This year, they look to rebound.
Gone are seniors Tommy Carrico and Joseph George, two of the top golfers from last year's squad. Three of the top five from last year remain, however, and look to lead the Knights this season.
Brian Loper, Joseph Elder and Taylor Brady return to avenge last season.
"They'll be the ones we count on the heaviest," Head Coach Freddie Leathers said. "They're all capable of shooting in the low 70's. Taylor has an advantage because he was our second guy last year. Elder improved a lot over the summer and has been shooting around par golf so far."
Leathers has 12 golfers total this season. Three of those will be battling for the fifth spot. Blair Gorley, Korey Hundley and Logan Medley will battle it out for the remaining spots in the top five.
"Gorley has improved a lot," Leathers said. "Hundley sat out last season and has come on strong, shooting in the upper 80's."
The team will get valuable experience with their tournament schedule. So far they are slated to play in six tournaments, including their host tournament, the Marion County Invitational.
The tournament welcomes 24 teams, including 14 or 15 that competed in the state tournament last season.
Leathers said the only team missing from the field that he would like to have is Lexington Catholic, who has a new coach that signed up for a different tournament. Leathers said St. Xavier High School in Louisville also contacted him about the tournament but he had a full house at the time, not knowing Lexington Catholic would be out. Bardstown High School ended up replacing Lexington Catholic in the field.
The Knights started play on Monday in the Danville Invitational. They continue play on Thursday at Washington County and compete in the Taylor County Invitational on Saturday.
