Cross Country begins new season

This year’s Marion County Cross Country team consists of 30 runners from grades four through 12.
The high school team has the most runners they’ve had in many years with 19 runners making up both a boys and girls team. Coach Sherbie King said he was quite pleased with the results of the team’s first meet.
The team traveled to Nelson County High School on Monday, Sept. 13, for its first meet of the season. In the Bernard Keene Invitational, the Marion County Middle School girls team competed against five teams and placed fourth. Individual runners and the places they earned were out of 51 runners.
Autumn McCarty 15th; Chelsea Wright 16th; Meredith Bartley 17th; Laurel Brahm 18th; Gretchen Walston 24th; Hallie Hamilton 25th; Jayla Cowherd 26th; Mariella Curtis 28th, and Skylar McCarty 35th. The Marion County Middle School boys competed against six other teams but there are not enough boys to make a team. Individual runners and the places they earned were out of 63 runners. Noah Leake 26th; Ty Wheeler 28th; Noah Spalding 34th; and Austin Wethington 54th.
The Marion County varsity girls team competed against seven teams and placed fifth as a team. Individual runners and the places they earned were out of 50 runners. Morgan Avritt 12, Hope Riggs 30; Mary Helen Hamilton 37; Courtney Hutchins 46th; and Emily Clark 49th.
The Marion County varsity boys team competed against seven teams also and placed sixth as a team. Individual runners and the places they earned were out of 75 runners. Tyler Fields 34th; Logan Vaughn 50th; Jake Smith 52nd; Ryker Cassidy 60th; Tyler Garrard 63rd; Logan Ballard 72nd; and Jason Mattingly 73rd.
