Cross Country competes in three meets

The Marion County Cross Country team competed Oct. 11 at Mercer County, Oct. 13 at Green County, and in the Fox and the Hound Race at the Forkland Festival Saturday.

At Mercer County,  Madison Avritt took first place, Morgan Avritt took second place, and Mary Helen Hamilton finished fourth. The girls did not qualifty as a team.

The boys team placed second at Mercer County. Nathan Devine finished fourth, followed by Logan Vaughn (sixth), Logan Ballard (eighth), Ryker Cassidy (10th), and Dylan Leake (11th). Tanner Strong and Jason Mattingly were 12th and 13th, respectively.

The Marion County Middle School girls team placed second. Running were Chelsea Wright (seventh), Laurel Brahm (11th), Meredith Bartley (15th), Jayla Cowherd (26th), Hallie Hamilton (27th), Autumn McCarty (29th), Mariella Curtis (32nd), and Skylar McCarty (33rd).  For the Marion County Middle School boys, Ty Wheeler (15th), Noah Leake (26th), Noah Spalding (27th), and Austin Wethington (29th).

At Green County, both Marion County High School teams returned with second-place Heartland Conference trophies. Four conference schools competed among the nine schools at the meet.

Overall, the Lady Knights placed fourth in the Green County meet. Hope Riggs led the Lady Knights in 17th, followed by Madison Avritt (19th), Chelsea Wright (24th), Meredith Bartley (31st) and Mary Helen Hamilton (36th). 

The Knights also finished fourth as a team. Nathan Devine (13th) was the top finisher, followed by Tyler Garrard (26th), Logan Vaughn (28th), Jake Smith (32nd), Logan Ballard (33rd), Tanner Strong (38th), Ryker Cassidy (39th), Dylan Leake (40th) and Jason Mattingly (53rd).

The middle school girls team was third. Their runners were Laurel Brahm (fifth), Hallie Hamilton (15th), Jayla Cowherd (21st), Autumn McCarty (24th), Gretchen Walston (25th), Mariella Curtis (28th) and Skylar McCarty (30th).  

The Middle School boys team members placed as follows: Ty Wheeler (24th), Noah Leake (27th), Noah Spalding (33rd) and Austin Wethington (39th).

Eleven Marion County runners competed in the Fox and the Hound Race Saturday at the Forkland Festival. Chelsea Wright was the first girl overall, Hope Riggs won the girls 13-18-year-old division. Madison and Morgan Avritt were second and third. Logan Ballard won the boys 13-18-year-old division, and Laurel Brahm won among girls 12 and under.
