Marion County High School Lady Knights standout point guard Makayla Epps recently received an invitation to participate in team trials for the under-16 USA Basketball team.
The try-outs for this 12-member team will be held from May 26-30 in Colorado Springs, Colo.
The USA Basketball Developmental National Team Committee asked approximately 30 athletes to receive an invitation to attend the trials. Other athletes will be allowed to try out by submitting an application. Due to space limitation, a maximum of 200 athletes will be permitted to attend the trials.
If Epps qualifies for the U16 USA national team, the 2011 FIBA Americas U16 Championship will be held June 14-18 at Ciudad de la Paz Stadium in Merida, Mexico.
The championship is held bi-annually as the USA finished undefeated in 2009 to qualify for the U17 FIBA World Championship in 2010. The 2011 event serves as the qualifying tournament for the 2012 U17 World Championship.
Epps’ list of accomplishments during her career at Marion County High School include: All-time career leading scorer for the Lady Knights with 1,865 points, she holds the school record for most three point goals in a game with eight, is one of 13 members of the 1,000 point club, and has led her team to back-to-back state tournament appearances.
