Though they did not come in first, the Marion County High School track team is still one of the best around. On May 23, eight local athletes rocked the bluegrass by competing in the state track meet at the University of Kentucky.

Track Coach Daniel Johnson said competing at the state level was an honor for the team.

“It’s what we worked all year for,” Johnson said.

According to KHSAA, the boys placed 34th and the girls did not place in the team competition.

“When you set your goals to qualify,” Johnson said. “It’s hard to run well at state.”

Nevertheless, Johnson praised his team and said they were competitive.

Freshman Dylan Bradshaw placed fifth in the pole vault by clearing 12 feet, 6 inches, and senior Miranda Bradshaw took 12th in the 200-meter dash with a time of 26.81 seconds.

Miranda Bradshaw was upbeat about her outcome.

“I didn’t perform my best,” she said,” But I guess since I made it here it’s pretty good.”

In fact, for many, it was just an honor to be there.

“It was a great experience,” junior Jalen Powell said. “It was fun. It’s better than I expected it to be.”

Powell competed in the boys 4x100 meter relay along with Samaad Bouie, Quamane Johnson, and Justin Dawson.

“It’s a great experience every time I come back,” Dawson said.

This was Dawson’s third appearance at the state meet, although it will be his last time because he is a senior.

One younger athlete was confident that Marion County athletes will return, however.

“This is my first time,” junior Quamane Johnson said. “But I’ll be back next year.”
