GIRLS BASKETBALL: Lady Knights take down Metcalfe

-A A +A
By Gerard Flanagan

Trailing at half and trying to shrug off a sluggish start, the Lady Knights needed all their energy, resolve and talent to mount a comeback.
"We discussed at the half what we needed to do, which was step it up defensively," Lady Knights Head Coach Kenny Mills said. "The girls responded."
Marion County did just that, turning a two-point halftime deficit into a 56-45 win at Metcalfe County Feb. 6, overcoming not just a sluggish night, but a career night from MacKenzie Coleman - the Lady Hornet's leading scorer put up 31 points.
"We tried to keep everyone else from scoring. Her height was the biggest problem she gave us," Mills said. "We played with more intensity in the second half as opposed to the first half."
Haeli Howard led the Lady Knights with 29 points to go along with eight steals, which she also led the team in. Freshman Dailyn Spalding added 12 and Leah Hazelwood had six rebounds.

Marion County blown out by Lady Eagles
Hailey Free only had three points when the Lady Knights defeated North Bullitt last year. She surpassed that total in the first quarter last week. Her teammate Lauren Deel didn't have a bad game either. Free scored 15 while Deel added 18 as North Bullitt handed the Lady Knights a 69-40 loss Feb. 7.
"They're a good, solid ballclub," Mills said. "Lauren Deel is a very good player and Hailey absolutely killed us. She played a great game, her and Deel both. Our defense was not good at all, and Free got too many open looks."
Free finished 6-12 from the field while Deel pulled down 11 rebounds. Howard led Marion County with 16.

Sloppy play derails Lady Knights
A string of bad passes and poor rebounding bogged down the Lady Knights in a 72-52 loss Thursday evening at the Roby Dome against Boyle County, overshadowing a 33-point effort from Howard.
The Lady Knights had as many turnovers as made field goals. Put poor rebounding and a lack of effort on top of it, and it was a dismal outing for the Lady Knights.
"The lack of effort that started in our game against North Bullitt carried over into tonight I felt," Mills said. "It was a rough night. We felt like our players didn’t step up to the challenge, and we can’t depend on Haeli to make all of our points. We have to have other kids step up and score."
Marion County committed 19 turnovers in the contest and shot 19-46 (41.3 percent) from the field. Howard had 12 of the made field goals in the game. Besides Howard, no other Lady Knight had more than five points.
