In the first game of the Republic Bank Classic last Saturday morning at Lexington Catholic, the Marion County Lady Knights girls’ varsity basketball team defeated Southwestern by four points in a 58-54 victory. Junior guard Bre Elder poured in 29 points to help the Lady Knights slip past the previously undefeated Warriors.
“Bre stepped up and played a great game,” Lady Knight Head coach Trent Milby said.
Southwestern senior guard Danay Fothergill nailed seven three point goals in route to her game high 33 points, but her efforts weren’t enough to overcome Marion County.
Within the first two minutes of the game, the Lady Knights jumped out to a 7-2 lead, which was their biggest lead in the first half. Numerous fouls against Marion County in the first quarter allowed the Warriors to mount a comeback. After an Elder free throw with 2:09 remaining in the period and the Lady Knights leading 15-14, Southwestern went on a 7-0 run to close the frame and lead 21-15.
Marion County began the second quarter by scoring nine points, and allowing Southwestern only one field goal until 2:19 remaining in the half. The Warriors scored the next five points, giving them a lead of four points until Elder scored six straight points for the Lady Knights to tie the game at 30 going into the halftime break.
The first five minutes of the third quarter, the two teams traded baskets until the score was tied once again at 41. Marion County finished the period on a 8-1 run, allowing them to lead 49-42 at the end of this frame. Elder and sophomore Makayla Epps scored eight and seven points respectively during the third quarter.
Southwestern sharpshooter Fothergill opened the fourth quarter with her seventh three-point field goal of the game, pulling the Warriors to within four points. Southwestern cut the lead to two points with 34 seconds remaining, before sophomore Kyvin Goodin-Rogers nailed two key free throws to seal the win for the Lady Knights. Elder had another strong quarter, scoring seven of the nine team points in the fourth period.
“The way Fothergill was shooting the ball”, Coach Milby said, “We were fortunate to come away with a win.”
The Lady Knights will play Community School, Fla., on Monday morning at 10:30 a.m. in the second round of the Republic Bank Classic. Results from this game, along with games on Tuesday and Wednesday will be available in next week’s issue.
