The Marion County Lady Knights tennis team competed in the regional tennis tournament, held May 13-17 in Elizabethtown, which finished up their season.
Two Marion County singles players, Olivia Thompson and Taylor Corbett, and one doubles team of Hayley Abell and Allie Evans, competed in the opening round matches on Friday to determine whether or not they would advance to the second round of the regional tournament, while the doubles team of Madison Cassidy and Elyssa Holt received a first round bye.
In singles action, Olivia Thompson was defeated by Taylor County’s Aryn Massengale in three sets (7-6), (5-7), and (5-7). According to Head Coach Angela Holt, the evenly matched opponents traded the lead throughout the match.
“Even though she couldn’t pull the upset in the tournament, Olivia has done an excellent job for the team in the No. 1 singles spot,” she said.
Marion County’s Taylor Corbett won her match against Taylor County’s Lauren Johnson in two sets (6-4) and (6-1) after a slow start, making it to the second round of play. However, in the second round of action, Corbett lost to John Hardin’s Ragland in three sets (1-6), (6-4), and (1-6).
In doubles action, the team of Hayley Abell and Allie Evans easily won their first round match against John Hardin’s Bibelhauser and Layson in two sets (6-0) and (6-0). However, in the second round, this duo fell to the Snow sisters from Elizabethtown in two sets (2-6) and (2-6).
The Marion County doubles team of Madison Cassidy and Elyssa Holt won their second round match against Meade County’s Coppage and McKinney in two sets (6-3) and (6-3), but fell to Central Hardin’s King and Thomas (the No. 5 seed) in two sets (2-6) and (2-6). This loss would take away their chance to qualify for state.
