Give the gift of life

-A A +A

Everyone can join the Kentucky Organ Donor Registry to save lives – regardless of age or medical history

By Stevie Lowery

Imagine waking up this morning and finding out that you need a life-saving organ to survive.
You, a family member or a friend might be living that reality today.
Or, you might find out tomorrow that you need a new kidney.
Or, a week from now your doctor could tell you that your child needs a new heart, your mother needs new lungs or your father needs a new liver to survive.
Can you imagine?
More than 1,000 adults and children in Kentucky are living that reality right now. They are waiting for a life-saving transplant this very second.
Unfortunately, many men, women and children waiting for an organ won’t get one in time. Every day, 21 people die awaiting an organ transplant.
Every 10 minutes, someone is added to the waiting list.
It’s a vicious cycle.
A deadly cycle.
But, we have the ability to improve those statistics, which is why The Lebanon Enterprise promotes organ donation awareness as much as possible. This week’s edition is dedicated to telling the stories of several local people who have been touched by the gift of organ donation. We hope their stories inspire you to become a registered organ donor today if you aren’t already.
Currently, 47.3 percent of Marion County’s total population are registered organ and tissue donors. That’s a significant increase from 2014 when the county was at 41 percent.
But, we can do better.
Everyone can join the Kentucky Organ Donor Registry to save lives – regardless of age or medical history. If everyone says “yes” and joins the registry - everyone in need of a transplant could receive one.
Join Kentucky’s Organ Donor Registry at your Circuit Court Clerk’s Office or go online to www.donatelifeky.org.
