Holiday hoops a mixed bag

 On Dec 23, the Marion County Knights marched out of the Warren East Classic victorious when they narrowly defeated the North Oldham Mustangs, 73-68.


Junior guard Anton Cowherd and senior guard Latrelle Irvin both had double doubles for the Knights (9-3) in the win.

Irvin scored 22 points, including 10 free throws, and grabbed 13 rebounds, while Cowherd contributed 20 points and 11 rebounds.

Alex Smith chipped in 10 points for Marion County.

With the win notched in their belt, the Knights turned their attention to their own tournament, the Marion County Holiday Classic.

The Knights (9-3) kicked off the classic Dec. 26 with a 79-49 win over the Caverna Colonels (5-5).

Marion County took control of the game in the second quarter when the Knights outscored the Colonels, 21-5, and took a 19-point lead into the break.

Cowherd had a second straight double double, scoring 21 points and pulling down 15 rebounds. Cowherd made 10 of his 14 free throws attempts in the game.

Latrelle Irvin was perfect from the field making all eight of his field goal attempts to score 16 points to go along with nine rebounds. Smith once again scored 10 points for the Knights. Friday, the Knights defeated Spencer County Bears (3-7), 77-71, behind a 21-point, eight-rebound performance by Latrelle Irvin.

The Knights closed the Marion County Holiday Classic Sunday with a 60-51 win over the Bethlehem Eagles (2-6). Irvin scored 18 points and grabbed five rebounds to lead the Knights.

The All-Tournament team for the Marion County Classic was Latrelle Irvin, Anton Cowherd, and Anthony Mattingly of Marion County; Mason Faulkner, Devon Paul and Trevor Stephons of Caverna; Cameron Fitts and Blake Lambdin of Spencer County; and Jude Hutchins and Shane Beisler of Bethlehem.

Lady Knights

The Marion County Lady Knights (3-6) played in the Mercer County Titan Holiday Classic to close out 2013. Friday, the Lady Knights lost to the Eastern Eagles (7-2), 53-51, despite 14 points and 17 rebounds by senior center Alexus Calhoun. Sophomore guard Samantha Daugherty scored 12 points on four 3-pointers in the loss.

Saturday, George Rogers Clark Lady Cardinals (6-4) topped the Lady Knights, 60-53. Calhoun again led Marion County with 18 points (including 10 free throws), and freshman point guard Haeli Howard added 13 points.
