Holiday season tourneys

-A A +A

Being a member of the Lady Knights basketball team from 1994 to 1998, I fondly remember playing in a basketball tournament at Bethlehem the week after Christmas every year. I always enjoyed that holiday tournament, being off from school and getting to play basketball several nights.
Now as a sports correspondent, I am going to enjoy several holiday tournaments this year, as both the girls basketball team and the boys basketball team will be participating in two each. It will be a busy couple of weeks, but I am hoping to see some good and exciting basketball games.
First of all, as you are reading this, the girls basketball team is playing in the Nike Tournament of Champions in Phoenix, Ariz. Of course, this is the one tournament I will not be attending due to a minor geographical issue. However, they are playing nationally ranked teams. The top five teams in the nation are actually in the Lady Knights bracket, so the girls are definitely seeing what they are made of. Hopefully, the Lady Knights will come back to Kentucky with a couple of wins, but if not, I am sure their level of play will improve after competing against teams of that caliber.
Also as you are reading this, the boys basketball team is playing in the Whitaker Bank/Fort Harrod Classic held in Mercer County, which they also participated in last year. Their first opponent on Tuesday was a team from Miami, Fla., and other possible opponents could be teams such as George Rogers Clark, Pulaski SW, Ohio County, DuPont Manual, Boyle County, and Greenup County.
Starting on the Tuesday after Christmas, the girls basketball team will be playing in the Mercer Titan Christmas Clash. The Lady Knights’ first round opponent will be Paul Laurence Dunbar. This tournament will continue from Tuesday, Dec. 27 through Friday, Dec. 30.
The Knights basketball team will also be in action after Christmas, starting on Wednesday, the Dec. 28, and continuing through Dec. 31. The tournament they will be competing in is the Citizens Bank/Campbellsville University Classic.
Both the girls and boys basketball players have a busy holiday break full of basketball games in their respective tournaments. I am sure they will have a good time playing with their team members, and will make fond memories that will last as mine have.
So there you have it, a schedule of the holiday tournaments that are going on now or upcoming next week. If you have time, go enjoy the games and support your Marion County Knights and Lady Knights basketball teams.
