Holt, Cassidy win conference doubles title

Duo wins fifth consecutive championship

The Marion County Lady Knights tennis team competed in the Heartland Conference in Campbellsville on Sunday and Monday of last week, where the doubles duo of Elyssa Holt and Madison Cassidy came away with their fifth straight title.
In singles action, Allie Evans upset the No. 2 seed Campbellsville’s Brooklyn Harris 7-6 (8-6) 6-3 but fell to Taylor County’s Cassie Miller in her second match 2-6 2-6. Alyssa Farmer won her first match against Taylor County’s Meredith Johnson 6-4 7-6 (7-5), but fell in her second match to Taylor County’s Aryn Massengale 2-6 6-2 (10-6). Kristina Leake played in the No. 3 singles spot, but lost in the first round 4-8.
In doubles, Holt and Cassidy defeated Taylor County’s Canada/Taylor 6-0 6-1 after receiving a first round bye. In the championship game, Holt/Cassidy beat Campbellsville’s Haley/Williams 6-0 6-0 to pick up their fifth consecutive Heartland Conference title.
The pair of Madeline Peterson and Miranda Bradshaw upset the No. 2 seed from Taylor County Richardson and Williams 0-6 7-6 (7-5) (10-2). However, in their next match, the team lost to Haley/Williams from Campbellsville High School 7-5 4-6 (8-10).
The Lady Knights hosted Elizabethtown High School Thursday night. Allie Evans defeated Lauren Riney 6-4 6-4. Alyssa Farmer fell to Lauran Berger 4-6 5-7. In doubles action, Elyssa Holt and Madison Cassidy lost to MacKenzie and Mary-Chapin Snow 3-6 0-6. Madeline Peterson and Miranda Bradshaw lost to Abby Henson and Lauren Hinkle 4-6 2-6.
On Saturday, the doubles team of Elyssa Holt and Madison Cassidy played in the Kyle Macy Doubles Tournament.
According to Coach Angela Holt, the girls received a tough first round draw, the top two singles players from Paducah Tilghman combining to play doubles. Holt and Cassidy lost 1-6 2-6, but Coach Holt says this was good practice for regionals.
