Wayne and Lynn Keen handed in their letters of resignation to Marion County Superintendent Donald Smith Monday of last week.

Wayne is the director of transportation and maintenance for the district, while his wife, Lynn, is the director of secondary education. They have both been employed with the board of education for 10 years.

"Wayne and I have decided to retire from Marion County Public Schools at the end of the 2009-10 school year," Lynn said in a written statement. "Our 10-year tenure in this district has been some of the most rewarding years of our career. This community is a great place to live and work. We look forward to our future and best wishes to our friends and colleagues."

The Keens will continue to work for the district until their contract expires June 30.

Marion County Superintendent Donald Smith said he received letters of resignations from the Keens on Monday morning, May 3.

"I don't know anything," Smith said. "They have not spoken to me. I have no clue why. I wish I did, but that's just the way life goes sometimes."

Smith said he will begin the process of finding replacements for the two positions in the matter of a few weeks.
