The Marion County High School boys' golf team couldn't claim one of the two spots open for the state tournament but a few golfers nearly qualified on their own at Pinewood Golf Course in Columbia Tuesday of last week.
The Knights shot a team score of 325 for a ninth place finish in the field of 19.
West Jessamine, as expected, claimed the region title with a team score of 287. Adair County took advantage of their home course and finished second with a 299.
Nate Johnson of West Jessamine claimed top individual honors, firing a 67.
Marion County senior Taylor Brady just missed a berth to state by two strokes. Brady shot a 74 but the last qualifying score went to Garrard County's Drew Moore who had a 72.
Junior Joseph Elder was four strokes off a qualifying score with a 76. Senior Brian Loper shot an 85 while Korey Hundley finished with a 90.
The Knights lose Loper and Brady to graduation. Elder returns next season to lead the squad.
Knights Head Coach Freddie Leathers will have plenty of golfers to choose from as he fielded a squad of 10 players this season.
The Leachman/KHSAA boys' state tournament begins Friday at 7 a.m. CST at Bowling Green Country Club.
