The Marion County Lady Knights varsity basketball team made the trip to Taylor County to face the Lady Cardinals in their final district game of the season  Friday night.
After defeating Taylor County by 47 points on Jan. 20 at the Roby Dome, Marion County nearly matched that performance with a 69-29 win. Behind a season and career high 25 points from junior Logan Powell, the Lady Knights cruised to the easy victory. With the win, the Lady Knights completed another undefeated district season with a 4-0 record, and haven’t lost a district game since Jan. 23, 2007, when the Lady Knights were defeated at home by Adair County 64-59 in overtime.
The Lady Knights blitzed the Lady Cardinals over the first five minutes of the game and led 17-1. Powell led the way for Marion County with 13 points in the first frame as Marion County held a 17 point lead. Taylor County scored the first two buckets of the second frame before Marion County went on a 12-2 run to finish the half and lead by 23 at the break.
In the second half, the Lady Knights remained in control and expanded their lead to 38 points after three quarters. Powell added eight more points in the third period while junior Kyvin Goodin-Rogers added seven of her own. Over the final period, the Lady Knights scored the first two buckets and the last two to finish up the rout and win by 40 points with a final score of 69-29.
“It’s a tough game to get up for, but it gives each player on the team a chance to play,” Head Coach Trent Milby said.
Milby also commented on the much improved play of Powell.
“Logan has the ability to score 20 points,” he said. “Now it just has to become consistent each night. She has played well all year and gives us another threat to score out there which will be very beneficial come tourney time. Also, she has really stepped up and rebounded the ball.”
