The Marion County Lady Knights jumped out to a 17-1 lead against district foe Campbellsville on Friday night and never looked back.
The host Lady Eagles never recouped from the 15-0 run, trailing 28-3 at the end of the first quarter. A bevy of turnovers and blocked shots kept the Lady Eagles from getting into a rhythm as the Lady Knights applied a smothering full court defense.
The Lady Eagles managed five more points before halftime, coming from a pair of free throws and a three pointer. The Lady Knights kept rolling like a well-oiled machine in the second quarter, boosting the lead to 38-3 off a 21-0 run. They took a 43-8 lead into the locker room at halftime.
The Lady Knights left their starters in but took their foot off the gas in the third quarter, getting outscored 13-10 by the Lady Eagles. Four of those 10 points came off free throws. The Lady Knights led 53-21 heading into the final stanza.
While being lulled to sleep in the third, the Lady Knights weren't done disassembling the Lady Eagles yet. Head Coach Trent Milby kept the starters in until late in the final quarter while the Lady Knights went on a 14-0 run to build the game's largest lead at 71-22.
Ann Morgan Reynolds, Tee Bridgewater, Emily Fenwick, Sabrina Tom and Ann Taylor Medley saw some garbage time with the game well in hand. The cleanup crew finished off the Lady Eagles 76-29 on the road. Their win extended their current overall win streak to nine games. The district win was their 15th in a row. They are currently 18-1 in district play over the last two seasons.
The Lady Eagles suffered their worst loss of the season, falling by 47 points. Marion County won by 41 points in their first meeting. The Lady Knights held the Lady Eagles to their lowest scoring game of the season in that game, beating Campbellsville 63-22.
The Lady Knights have a recent history of tearing apart the Lady Eagles. Last season's victories include thrashings of 73 points (101-28), 59 points (91-32) and 51 points (75-24). In the last two seasons, the Lady Knights average margin of victory over the Lady Eagles is 54 points.
Makayla Epps led the Lady Knights in scoring with 16. Bre Elder added 13 while Kyvin Goodin-Rogers chipped in 11. Shakila Goodin got off to a hot start and finished with 10 points.
Danielle Morris was the only Lady Eagle to score in double figures. She finished with 14 points.
