The Marion County Lady Knights tennis team played in two matches last week against Campbellsville and Taylor County. The team ended up defeating Campbellsville, but fell to Taylor County.
On Thursday, the Lady Knights were able to pick up a 3-2 win over Campbellsville. In singles competition, Taylor Corbett lost to Brooklyn Harris in three sets, 2-6, 6-3, 10-8. Alyssa Farmer was able to defeat Campbellsville's Morgan Milby, 6-2, 6-4. Marion County's Emma Thompson picked up a win over Bayli Dickens, 8-3.
In doubles competition, Elyssa Holt and Madison Cassidy won their match over Morgan Milby and Brooklyn Harris, 6-4, 6-2. The pair of Madeline Peterson and Rebecca Evans lost to Campbellsville's Nan K and Brittany Ford in three sets, 4-6, 6-1, 10-8.
Head Coach Angela Holt said that Campbellsville's team is led by a couple of experienced eight graders, who started playing as fifth graders and have developed into pretty strong players.
"Taylor Corbett was very evenly matched with Brooklyn Harris," Holt said. "They split sets and Taylor came up short in the tie-breaker. Alyssa Farmer won her first set easily. In the second set she got behind a few games but came back to win in straight sets, 6-2 6-4. Emma Thompson played No. 3 singles against Bayli Dickends. This was Emma's first time playing in a singles match. She easily defeated her opponent, 8-3."
Campbellsville's No. 1 and No. 2 singles players paired up to play against Elyssa Holt and Madison Cassidy. The Lady Knights came out on top, winning that one, 6-4, 6-2. Madeline Peterson and Rebecca Evans played No. 2 doubles against Nan K and Brittany Ford.
"This was Rebecca's debut match," Holt said. "Even though they were unable to win this very close match, I was pleased with the effort the girls gave."
On March 19, the Lady Knights tennis team lost 3-2 to Taylor County. In singles action, Marion County's Taylor Corbett lost to Aryn Massengale, 6-1, 6-2. Alyssa Farmer fell to Taylor County's Raven Burress after taking the match to a tiebreaker, 6-1, 2-6, 7-5. Lady Knight Allie Evan picked up a win over Kori Richerson, 8-6.
In doubles action, the Marion County duo of Elyssa Holt and Madison Cassidy defeated Kasandra Richerson and Rachel Riggs, 6-1, 6-0. The doubles pair of Madeline Peterson and Rebecca Evans lost to Taylor County's Tamy Morerira and Meredith Johnson, 6-0, 6-1.
"Taylor County has strong singles players in Massengale and Burress," Holt said. "In the No. 2 singles match Alyssa Farmer lost the first set but made adjustments to her game and was able to come back to defeat her opponent in the second set. Unfortunately she was unable to pull off the win, losing the third set in a close one, 5-7."
Holt also commented on the play of Allie Evans and the duo of Holt and Cassidy.
"Allie Evans gave us another solid effort winning her pro set, 8-6," Holt said.  "Elyssa and Madison were at the top of their game. Elyssa was effective in using cross court backhand shots to score points and Madison controlled the net."
