The Marion County Lady Knights hit the road Tuesday of last week in their final tune-up before their trip to the Nike Tournament of Champions in Phoenix, Ariz.  Green County was the opponent and Marion County took care of business early and often. Juniors Kyvin Goodin-Rogers and Makayla Epps led the way with each having 20 points or more along with junior Logan Powell adding 19. The Lady Knights went on to cruise to a 92-61 victory. The 92-point outburst was the most points scored by the Lady Knights in the regular season since a 96-point outburst on Jan. 24, 1995 against Washington County.
The game started out at a feverish pace, with the two teams scoring buckets faster than most stat keepers could write them down. After the first eight-minute frame the two teams had combined for 41 points, 26 of those by the Lady Knights. Goodin-Rogers led the way with 14 of her 21 points in the opening period.
Marion County maintained their imposing will during the second quarter and increased their lead from 11 points, to 15 points at the half. The Lady Knights used an 11-1 run early in the quarter to pull away and lead 42-27 at the halftime break.
The third period was much like the first with both teams putting up points at a frenzied pace. The teams put up a combined 43 points in this frame, but Marion County increased its lead to 18 points at the close of the period. Epps and Powell led the way for the Lady Knights by each putting in seven points.
Over the final eight minutes, the Lady Dragons ran out of steam and the Lady Knights pulled away. Marion County tallied an impressive 27 points in the final quarter to crack the 90-point mark. The buzzer would finally sound and the Lady Knights were victorious, 92-61.
“We played very well offensively with Patrice and Logan really stepping up lately,” Head Coach Trent Milby said. “I think people will see this throughout the year.”
