Marion County didn’t waste any time defeating the Thomas Nelson Generals on the Thursday.
The teams had agreed to play two out of three (instead of three out of five), and the Lady Knights won, 25-11, 25-20, at home.
Marion County Coach David Hibbard had a simple assessment of the first set of the match.
“We were really good, and they were really bad,” he said.
In the second set, the Lady Knights defense wasn’t as good, Hibbard said, but it was still good enough to win.
He said senior middle hitter Alexus Calhoun and junior outside hitter Sara Abell were the players of the match.
“Those two pretty well dominated the net,” Hibbard said.
Earlier in the week, Marion County (14-7) lost to another regional foe, the LaRue County Lady Hawks (16-4). LaRue County won the Sept. 24 match, 23-25, 25-20, 25-23, 29-27.
“LaRue is a very solid team so we knew we would have to play well to beat them-we did not play well,” Hibbard wrote in an email. “We just gave away too many free points in our service and hitting game to give ourselves a chance to win.”
He noted that the Lady Knights committed 15 hitting errors in the opening set, yet managed to win behind some powerful hitting by senior Abby Murphy, who recorded three kills in the final six points of the set.
After that, the errors were too much for the Lady Knights to overcome, according to Hibbard. In the third set, Marion County committed seven serving errors, including three in a row.
