The Marion County Lady Knights have a lot to celebrate.
They have completed the most successful run in the history of Marion County girls basketball. During the past three seasons, the Lady Knights have won back-to-back-to-back regional titles. They've made it to the final four of the Sweet Sixteen two years in a row.
And this year, they became the first Lady Knights team to reach the state finals.
Let that sink in for a moment.
Our girls have proven they can play with the best teams in Kentucky, and this year, they also proved they could compete with the top teams in the nation.
It probably means something that only one team in the state was able to get a win over Marion County this year, and it means something that Marion County defeated them, too. Saturday's state championship was a coin flip that easily could have gone either way.
Going into the season, the community and even the state had high expectations for our local team, and we feel confident in saying the Lady Knights lived up to all of them. Few schools understand the pressure of playing as the favorite each and every night, and our girls held up against that pressure all season.
We hope when this year's players look back on the season, they will recognize what they accomplished. Not only did they distinguish themselves on the court, they also brought the community together. We're just glad we got to tag along for the ride.
This season was special because of you, Lady Knights. Hold your heads high. You are our champions, and we couldn't be more proud.
