Letter: ‘Tree tunnels’ are gone along Route 49

-A A +A

I am horrified by the way the trees are pruned along route 49 between the Nelson County line and Raywick. The people of Marion County should be, too.

The county wasted a lot of taxpayer money pruning every tree so that there wouldn't be any branches over the roadway. Almost every pruning cut they made is one the International Society of Arboriculture (isa-arbor.com) would consider improper. Probably, because of this improper pruning, more than half of these roadside trees will begin a slow decline and die in the years to come. As a result, your road department will have more to deal with as those trees die, then if they would have just left them alone. Or, they could have used proper pruning methods, which would have significantly decreased the amount of county resources used. I know trees along the roadway need maintenance. However, in this case, your trees were brutalized at your expense.

One of my favorite things about driving to the country with my grandparents as a kid was driving through the "tree tunnels.” Now those "tree tunnels" are gone.
