As a founding member and current president of the Marion County Humane Society, I would like to commend and congratulate the staff and volunteers at the Marion County Animal Shelter for their excellent efforts on behalf of animals (and people) these past few years. My good friend, the late Georgia Duley (the original president), would be so proud and happy if she could see what the shelter has evolved into. Adopt-a-thons, fostering programs, community outreach, Barktoberfest, young people volunteering at the shelter, school kids raising money for the animals - all these things were only a dream back in 1979 when we started. (Georgia and I had to go to fiscal court meetings and beg for puppy food!)
The staff at the shelter work so very hard (and with little thanks) to make the best effort at finding good homes for the animals, even working with rescue organizations in other states, on their own time, if necessary.
Their job is very difficult, as you can well imagine. It’s physically, as well as emotionally draining. It takes a special kind of person, with dedication, compassion, and yes, a love of animals. They deserve our respect, gratitude and support.
If you’ve never visited the shelter, or if it’s been a while, why not take the kids out for a visit? See for yourself all the good work that’s being done.
