Letter: Learn about epilepsy

-A A +A

More than three million Americans have epilepsy or a seizure disorder, and 50 million worldwide. I am one of thousands of volunteers working to raise awareness of this condition.

Epilepsy is just as common as breast cancer, but many people know little about it or what to do when someone is having a seizure.

According to the NIH, only $1 million was donated to epilepsy research during the last five years, compared to $5.2 billion for breast cancer. It’s time to raise awareness for epilepsy as well. That’s why I am producing a film to create awareness, and why the Epilepsy Foundation asked everyone to take the Get

Seizure Smart! quiz in November for Epilepsy Awareness Month. The numbers speak for themselves.

I have lived with epilepsy for 20 years, with lack of resources and support - mostly due to lack of education. The majority of people want to help, once they realize the needs of someone like me, with epilepsy. This is why we need you to develop an interest in this cause! There are three million Americans that need your help!

Information about “The Sacred Disease”, the movie, can be found at www.sacreddisease.com, and a copy of the Get Seizure Smart quiz is available at www.GetSeizureSmart.org.  As someone affected by epilepsy, I strongly encourage everyone to take the quiz. If you are interested in the cause for epilepsy awareness, feel free to contact me at tiffany.webb4@gmail.com. I’ll happily point you in the right direction.

My life, or that of a loved one, may depend upon it.
