LMS second in state tourney

The Lebanon Middle School Sixth Grade Patriot basketball team competed in the sixth grade state tournament at the Kentucky Basketball Academy in Lexington from Jan. 25 through the Jan. 27.
The tournament consisted of 64 sixth-grade middle school teams from across Kentucky vying for the opportunity to be state champs. The pool of 64 teams were seeded and divided into four regions of 16 teams, based on the outcomes of the pool play games.
The Patriots forfeited their first pool play game against East Oldham due to poor road conditions.  In the second game, the Patriots defeated Paintsville 59-29. Trevor Douglas led all of LMS scorers with 14, hitting four three-pointers Dontey Cowherd, Marcus Yantis and Travis Wiser each added nine.  
The Patriots first draw of the tournament was Saturday afternoon against ninth seed Meade County. The Patriots cruised to a 40-28 win behidn 12 points from DeJhon Irvin. Dontey Cowherd contributed 10, and Trevor Douglas added eight.
LMS faced Beaumont, the top seed in their region early Saturday evening. LMS was able to pull away at the end to win, 41-35. Travis Wiser and Trevor Douglas led all scorers with 12 each.  Dontey Cowherd added 11.
In the Sweet 16, LMS faced  fourth seed Bryan Station Saturday night. The Patriots won, 47-39, with Travis Wiser leading all scorers with 15. DeJhon Irvin added 13, and Dontey Cowherd added 10.
The Patriots returned to action early Sunday morning for an Elite Eight showdown against the Highlands Middle School, the No. 2 seed out of Region 1. A 36-32 win secured a spot for LMS in the Final Four. Travis Wiser led all scorers with 10, DeJhon Irvin contributed nine and Dontey Cowherd contributed eight.
In the semifinals Sunday afternoon, the Patriots defeated No. 1 seed Scott County, 57-53.
In the championship, LMS lead by four points at the half over Region 3 champion and No. 1 seed Corbin. In the end, the Patriots had no answer for a 9-0 run by Corbin, and lost 52-47. DeJhon Irvin led all LMS scorers with 15. Trevor Douglas added nine, and Donety Cowherd and DeSean Taylor contributed eight each.
Corbin’s Cameron Maguet was named MVP of the tournament. Travis Wiser, DeJhon Irvin and Dontey Cowherd were all named to the State All-Tournament Teams.
