Lebanon Mayor Gary Crenshaw has appointed Sgt. Mike Luckett as the interim Lebanon Police Chief. Luckett took over as acting chief Feb. 1.
Crenshaw noted in a memorandum to the Lebanon Police Department that Luckett is not a candidate to fill the position permanently.
"This selection will help ensure that those applications from within the department are considered in an equitable manner," Crenshaw wrote.
In a phone interview, Crenshaw said Luckett is a competent and responsible person.
The police chief's position is open because of the retirement of Shelton Young, whose last official day as chief was Sunday.
Crenshaw added that he is extending the deadline for applications until Feb. 12. After the applications are received, he estimated it could take 60-90 days to hire a new chief.
He also said he has not yet decided if he will have a screening committee to evaluate the applicants.
"I'm going to wait and see how many applications I get," Crenshaw said.
