The Marion County Fiscal Court has scheduled a special called meeting at 8 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 20, on the third floor of the David R. Hourigan Government Center to take another look at proposed changes to the magisterial district boundaries.
On Sept. 15, the court voted 4-0 in favor of approving the first reading of an ordinance establishing the new boundaries and renaming the boundaries numerically. Magistrate John Arthur Elder III was not present at last week's meeting.
Based on the discussion during the Sept. 15 meeting, the court will likely make a few changes prior to final approval of the new district boundaries.
In particular, Magistrates Steve Masterson and Roger “Cotton” Smothers expressed some concerns about the boundaries between their districts.
The county is required to adjust its boundaries based on the 2010 Census data. Officials with the Lincoln Trail Area Development District are assisting the county in making adjustments to the district boundaries.
As far as the naming of the districts, here is how they would be identified if the proposal is approved:
- Jackie Wicker would represent District 1.
- Larry Caldwell would represent District 2.
- Roger "Cotton" Smothers would represent District 3
- Steve Masterson would represent District 4.
