Christmas cards… to some of us they are a tradition. To others, they are a nuisance. But, for Dalton Dingus, a 9-year-old boy in Salyersville, they are a Christmas wish come true.
Dalton, who has stage four cystic fibrosis, is hoping to receive a world record-breaking number of Christmas cards.
Initially, after a post on Facebook, cards came in slow, and most came from neighbors and friends. But then, cards started arriving from all over the country and world, including Marion County.
As of Monday afternoon, 4,125 Christmas cards were sent from Marion County schools and churches to Dalton’s home. Hundreds more have been stamped and are ready to be mailed before Dec. 25.
My son and I put our card to Dalton in the mail this morning.
It’s a simple act of kindness that will bring a smile to this young man’s face. And the thought of him smiling makes me smile. And we all need to smile, now more than ever. So many of us, for one reason or another, just aren’t in the Christmas spirit. So much heartache and sadness surrounds us. Dalton understands that more than anyone. Dalton reportedly takes 18 different medicines every day. He goes through 12 liters of oxygen a day and wears a facemask to help him breathe. In October, he came home from the hospital. Doctors had given him two to eight days to live.
But, he’s still here.
It’s a miracle, according to his mother.
The Christmas cards have given her son something to be excited about, she said. Something to smile about.
Last week, Dalton had already received close to 100,000 cards. On Thursday alone he received more than 30,000.
His mail carrier told ABCNews.com that she feels like Santa Claus delivering thousands of cards to Dalton everyday.
And some special delivery men and women have brought Dalton cards, including Miss Kentucky, a unit of Kentucky State Troopers and Marion County’s own Turtleman.
I urge every Marion Countian to send Dalton a Christmas card before Dec. 25. Help him set a world record. But, most importantly, give him a reason to smile.
