Through lightning, steamy summer heat, and the sulfur scent of starting pistols, the Marion County High School track team burst through the Class AA Region 2 track meet May 13 in Bardstown. What has proven to be a good season for the team quickly turned into an even better one as a handful of Marion County athletes advanced to the state meet, which will be held May 23 at the University of Kentucky. They are sophomore Meredith Bartley, freshman Dylan Bradshaw, senior Miranda Bradshaw, sophomore Rae Mills, junior Jalen Powell, senior Justin Dawson, junior Quamane Johnson and senior Samaad Bouie.
Bartley advanced to state in the 100-meter hurdles, finishing second in the region in 18.12 seconds. It was only her fourth time competing in that event.
“I’m shocked,” Bartley said.
She will also try her hand in the long jump after qualifying as an at-large participant with a jump of 14 feet, three inches.
Miranda Bradshaw will be advancing to compete in the 100 and 200 meters. She was an automatic qualifier in the 100-meter dash by finishing second in 13.04 seconds in the region. That achievement was one of her goals this season.
“It feels good,” Miranda Bradshaw said.
Mills qualified at large in the 800 meter run. Dylan Bradshaw will be competing in the pole vault while the other boys; Bouie, Johnson, Dawson and Powell will compete in the 4x100-meter relay.
Track Coach Daniel Johnson said he is thrilled for the team and their performances.
“I’m pumped,” he said.
While all of the young athletes’ hard work has paid off, Johnson was quick to say they’re not out of the woods just yet. He said they would be back to practicing the day after the regional meet.
“We’ve still got 10 days to get better,” Johnson said.
Overall, the girls team placed 10th with 24 points and the boys team tied for 11th with Nelson County with six points.
Johnson said he’s proud of the team’s seniors - Miranda Bradshaw, Ryan Thompson, Samaad Bouie and Justin Dawson.
The first event in the Class AA state meet is scheduled to begin at 4:30 p.m. Friday at the University of Kentucky outdoor track facility in Lexington.
