Lebanon Middle School celebrates 2013 Kentucky Schools to Watch status

By Stevie Lowery

Lebanon Middle School was recently named one of the 2013 Kentucky Schools to Watch. There are currently only 13 schools statewide and 400 schools nationally that have achieved this honor. It puts LMS in an elite group of schools that have proven to be “academically excellent.”
The Schools to Watch program is part of an initiative developed and guided by the National Forum to Accelerate Middle-Grades Reform.
In January a team of four educators visited LMS and talked with students, teachers, administrators and parents. They also observed in classrooms and all common areas of the school, and reviewed the school’s achievement data, suspension rates, lesson plans, student work and sample assessments.
As one of the Schools to Watch, LMS will become a model for other middle schools across the state and country.
In June members of the Lebanon Middle School staff will be going to the National Schools to Watch Conference in Washington D.C., to make a presentation. At the conclusion of the conference, Arne Duncan, United States Secretary of Education, will present Lebanon Middle School with the “Schools to Watch” award.
