Marion County High School junior Makayla Epps recently became the all-time leading scorer in school history.
At the beginning of this season, Epps needed only 198 points to surpass all other players that have ever played at Marion County High School in total points. In the 14th game of the season, Epps accumulated her record breaking point against Mercer County in the championship game of the Mercer County/Harrodsburg Tourism Titan Christmas Clash. With 4:22 remaining until halftime, Epps nailed a long range three-pointer to put her on top of the heap.
Last season, Epps had surpassed the all-time girls point total of 1,802, set by Kristy Murphy. Epps also broke Sara Higdon and Dee Johnson's record of seven three-pointers in a game, when she nailed eight on Jan. 18, 2011 against Adair County.
With Epps being less than halfway through her junior year, many more records at Marion County High School could be shattered.
"It means a lot," Epps said. "It meant a lot when I broke Kristy's record, but this tops all of them. I've passed some of the Marion County greats, Kristy (Murphy), Dad (Anthony), Marlis (Scott). It means a lot."
Epps said when she started her varsity career she never thought she would get to this point.
"I started out young and to even score was a huge accomplishment then," Epps said. "Now knowing I've accomplished this means any kid can do it if they work at it."
Epps has her eye on a few other school records she would like to break.
"Now I'm setting my sights on 3,000 points, and possibly the school records in assists and steals," she said.
