Stick-Horse Egg and Spoon Derby is April 30

-A A +A

Since 1961, The Caring Place has helped and protected victims of domestic violence in our south-central communities. But it is in danger of closing in 2011 without more funding.
That’s where local citizens can help. The 1st Annual Stick-Horse Egg and Spoon Derby will take place from 1-4 p.m. April 30 at Graham Memorial Park.
The public is invited to participate in an afternoon of Derby-themed fun.  Organizations, churches, service providers, corporations, retailers along with children, can participate in the event
Three races are planned. The first qualifying stick horse race will begin at 1:30 p.m. The championship Derby will be held at 2 p.m., and the Kid’s Derby at 2:30 p.m. Everyone will be awarded a prize for entering. Trophy and roses from Loper Floral will be awarded to the championship Derby winner. Kids will receive special prizes, too.
During the event you make “bets/donations” of  $2 or more on your favorite stick horse and jockey to win, place or show. Each time event attendees make a “bet/donation” of $2 or more on your favorite stick horse and jockey it buys you another raffle ticket, and more chances to win the big prizes.
Local businesses, churches, and organizations can pay a $50 entry fee and paint and decorate with logos their cut-out stick horse. During the race, they will attempt to run the race holding their stick horse while balancing an egg on a spoon.
A kid’s Derby will also be included for children ages 4-12. Children need to provide their own stick horse - eggs and spoons will be provided. Entry fee is $1.
Following the qualifying race, those jockeys who finish the race without dropping their eggs will be entered into the championship Derby.
Other fun contests that the public can enter for $1 include the Best Derby Hat, Silly, Ugly Derby Hat and Best Stick Horse contests.
The public is invited to the free event to enjoy music, food and beverages, silent auction items, and buy sale items from area retailers. All proceeds will benefit The Caring Place.
Organizations who want to enter the event or contribute a raffle ticket prize or silent auction item must contact Elizabeth Wallen.
