The Marion County High School Knights and Lady Knights Cross Country teams traveled to Warren East High School for regional competition Saturday.
In the girls competition, the Lady Knights didn’t have enough runners to compete as a team, so they competed individually against 12 other schools, with a total of 63 runners. Hope Riggs finished 35th with a time of 24:17, Madison Avritt placed 36th with a time of 24:21, Morgan Avritt finished 38th with a time of 24:30, and Mary Helen Hamilton came in 59th with a time of 29:13.
The Marion County Knights team competed against 12 teams and took 9th as a team, with a total of 65 runners in the race. Individually, Nathan Devine placed 37th with a time of 20:20, Logan Ballard finished 51st with a time of 22:34, Tyler Garrard placed 52nd with a time of 22:36, Ryker Cassidy finished 61st with a time of 25:05, Tanner Strong placed 63rd with a time of 25:53, and Dylan Leake came in 64th with a time of 25:56.
No member of the Marion County High School Knights or Lady Knights cross country team will be competing in the state tournament. Despite this, Head Coach Sherbie King and Assistant Coach Karen O’Daniel are extremely proud of the team.
According to O’Daniel, there were only three returning high school runners at the beginning of the season, and those three helped recruit the largest boys and girls high school team in many years.
“Many will be returning next year, and we have a few middle school runners moving up to the high school level,” O’Daniel said. “We are confident that this team will become a stronger, more competitive team in the years to come.”
