Recently, the Lady Knights defeated the DuPont Manual Lady Crimsons in the Roby Dome in a battle of the top two girls basketball teams in the state. The only problem was, at the time, the Lady Knights were ranked behind the Lady Crimsons in the state rankings. However, with the win over Manual, Marion County leaped past the Lady Crimsons into the top spot of the state girls basketball rankings.
I may be a bit partial to the Lady Knights, since I write the stories about their games and have watched nearly all of their games, but I believe they were the best team in the state all along. No question that Manual is a great team; they proved that in the Roby Dome as they played the Lady Knights to a two-point loss. For all of the doubters out there, the win by the Lady Knights should have ended all those doubts and placed Marion County in the top spot in everyone's mind.
With the loss, and a two-point loss to Mercy just days earlier, Manual dropped to No. 3 in the Litkenhous ratings. Mercy stayed put at No. 4, and Perry County Central jumped to No. 2 in the rankings. In every poll that I could find that ranked girls teams in Kentucky, Marion County was on top.
Before I go any further, I want to say that I am writing this column on Sunday night. With that said, the new college basketball poll hasn't officially come out yet. However, with the loss of then No. 1 Syracuse and the victory by the Kentucky Wildcats, the Wildcats are poised to retake the No. 1 spot. As we all remember, Kentucky made a short stint at No. 1 before being upset by a game Indiana squad. With my two favorite teams on top of their respective polls, life is good in my basketball world.
Now, let's change gears just a bit. I would like to make you aware of something that I have been doing for quite a while. After each of the Knights and Lady Knights games this season, I have been posting an update on The Lebanon Enterprise's website.
These updates include a very brief summary about the game, the quarter scores for each team, and the individual point totals and records of the two teams. I want to encourage each and every one of you to visit the website at www.lebanonenterprise.com and check out the sports section for these updates.
As we are about to head into February, the postseason push is on for basketball teams. Both the Lady Knights and Knights are in positions to secure No. 1 seeds in the upcoming district tournaments. Of course, I hope that both teams make a deep run into the postseason, and both play to their fullest potential throughout the rest of the season.
