Lady Knights' duo wins doubles in Heartland Conference

The Marion County Knights tennis team had a stellar performance at the Heartland Conference on April 21-22, winning the championship. Alex Spalding won the crown of singles champion, while the pair of Noah Swencki and Jacob Burdette won the doubles crown.
The Marion County Lady Knights tennis team came away with a doubles victory from the duo of Elyssa Holt and Madison Cassidy at the conference tournament. Here are the full results of the tournament.
In singles action, Alex Spalding received a bye in the quarterfinal round, defeated Andrew Wooley of Adair County, 6-0, 6-0, in the semifinals, and won the singles crown by beating Mark Harris of Taylor County, 6-2, 6-4. Durbin Richardson won his quarterfinal match against Jonah Gillespie, 3-6, 6-4 11-9, but fell in the semifinal round to Mark Harris of Taylor County 6-2, 6-0. Jonah Gillespie defeated Cody Giles of Adair County in the first round, 8-0, but lost to Durbin Richardson 3-6, 6-4, 11-9 (super tiebreak) in the second round.
In doubles action, Noah Swencki and Jacob Burdette received a bye in the quarterfinal round, defeated McCubbin/Gupton of Taylor County, 6-0, 6-0 in the semifinals, and won the championship match by beating Cassidy/Spalding of Marion County, 6-1, 6-1. The pair of Ryker Cassidy/Michael Spalding defeated Wiggington/Sharpe of Taylor County, 8-5, in the quarterfinal round, won their match against Franklin/Mann of Adair County, 6-2, 6-3 in the semifinals, and lost to Swencki/ Burdette in the finals, 6-1, 6-1.
"We were happy with the overall outcome of the HAC tournament," Head Coach Landon Williams said. "We were competing against ourselves at two different times during the tournament in both singles and doubles."
In singles action for the Lady Knights, Allie Evans lost to Taylor County's Aryn Massengale, 6-4, 5-7. Alyssa Farmer won her first match over Campbellsville's Nan K, 6-2, 6-1, but lost to Taylor County's Aryn Massengale. Taylor Corbett won her first round match against Adair County's Allison Owens by default, won the next round match over Taylor County's Raven Burris, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3, but fell to Brooklyn Harris of Campbellsville, 6-3, 6-0.
In doubles competition, the pair of Emma Thompson and Madeline Peterson lost to Taylor County's Richerson/Riggs 8-1. The duo of Elyssa Holt won their first match against Dickin/Chelf of Campbellsville, 8-0, their second match over Marerira/Johnson of Taylor County, 6-1, 6-4, and defeated Riggs/Richerson of Taylor County in the finals, 6-2, 6-1, to win the girls' doubles championship.

Knights duo reach finals at Derby Day tourney
Both the Knights and Lady Knights tennis teams competed in the Kyle Macy Derby Day Doubles Tournament Saturday, with the pair of Noah Swencki and Jacob Burdette reaching the final round of the top flight. Full results of the tournament are as follows:
For the Knights, in Flight 1, Jacob Burdette/Noah Swencki defeated Lawrence County in the first round, 6-4, 7-6 (3). The duo won their quarterfinal match over Muhlenberg County, 3-6, 6-1, 11-9 (super tiebreak), defeated Manual (2), 6-3, 6-4, in the semifinals, but fell to Manual, 6-2, 6-1, in the finals.
In Flight 2, Alex Spalding/Durbin Richardson defeated LCA, 6-4, 6-0, in the first round, fell to Montgomery County in the second round, won their match against South Warren in the quarterfinal of consolation, 6-1, 6-4, beat Corbin in the semifinal of consolation, 4-6, 6-4, 11-6 (Super tiebreak), but lost to Russell in the finals of consolation, 6-1, 6-2.
In Flight 3, Ryker Cassidy/Michael Spalding defeated Lexington Catholic in the first round by default, fell to Henry Clay in the second round, 6-1, 6-2, and lost to Louisville Manual, 6-1, 6-1, in the first round of consolation.
The Marion County duo of Jonah Gillespie/Jesus Berlanga fell to Montgomery County in the first round, 6-3, 6-3, and lost to Muhlenberg County, 8-4, in the first round of consolation.
"Derby Day Doubles was a great success and Kyle Macy, the tournament director, was nice enough to present Swencki and Burdette with their hardware. He ran a great tournament with an incredible amount of competition. All four corners of the state were represented and quality doubles play and competition all over the place," Head Coach Landon Williams stated.
For the Lady Knights, Elyssa Holt and Madison Cassidy lost to Henry Clay No. 2, 6-0, 6-1, and fell to Scott County No. 2, 9-7. Emma Thompson and Madeline Peterson fell to Woodford County No. 3, 6-1, 6-4. Allie Evans and Alyssa Farmer won against Mercer County No. 3, 6-3, 6-4, beat Lexington Christian Academy No. 5, 6-7, 6-2, 7-6 (10-8), and lost to Dupont Manual No. 3, 6-2, 6-2.
