The Marion County High School Knights and Lady Knights tennis won four of five matches last week. The Knights defeated Central Hardin and Bethlehem, and the Lady Knights defeated Central Hardin, Bethlehem and Bardstown.
The Knights edged the Central Hardin Bruins, 3-2. In singles, Alex Spalding defeated Tad Skaggs, 6-1, 6-1. Ryker Cassidy defeated Kevin Britt, 7-5, 6-1, and Durbin Richardson defeated Alex Norton, 6-0, 4-6 (10-7), in a super tiebreaker.
In doubles, Knights’ Michael Spalding and Jonah Gillespie fell to Patel and Patel, 1-6, 2-6. Brandon Blandford and Will Famer lost to Nason and Compton, 0-6, 0-6.
“In addition to playing without one of our top guys, Jacob Burdette, Central Hardin is among the top teams in the region,” Knights Coach Landon Williams said. “They returned every player from a tie for second place overall in last year’s tournament. Jacob’s absence in most cases means that one reliable point becomes a question mark. I challenged our team prior to the match and they responded at every position. Fortunately, Alex and Ryker played tremendously well in singles, and Durbin Richardson came through in a tiebreak after splitting the first two sets. Michael and Jonah competed at one doubles against a quality and experienced doubles team, and I was awfully proud of those guys along with two seed doubles.”
The Lady Knights struggled against the Lady Bruins, losing 4-1.
In singles, Emily Novak defeated Alyssa Farmer, 6-0, 6-0, Riley Keys defeated Allie Evans, 6-4, 6-3, and Julie Stivers defeated Kristina Leake, 6-1, 6-1.
Marion County picked up its lone win in doubles play when Madison Cassidy and Elyssa Holt defeated Ashlee O’Brien and Sarah Rineker, 6-3, 6-3.  Miranda Bradshaw and Madeline Peterson fell to Ali Jordan and Taylor Mudd, 7-5, 6-1, .

In doubles play, Brandon Blandford and Trevor Hood fell to Surtees and Surtees, 2-6, 4-6, while Colby Hood and Hank Hardin defeated Sivori and C. Plouvier, 6-3, 7-5.
