Two softball teams vying for state titles

Marion County baseball teams still alive in district after weekend games

 Two Marion County softball teams open play in the Kentucky State Little League tournament this weekend in Springfield, while two Marion County baseball teams were still alive in their district tournaments.

11-12 baseball

With one win and one loss, the Marion County 11-12-year-old baseball team was still alive after weekend in the the District 5 Little League Tournament.

Marion County dropped a nail-biting 5-4 game against Campbellsville’s all-star team on June 28. 

With the game 1-1, Marion County took the lead at the top of the fourth by scoring three runs. Campbellsville however, would answer with two runs and trailed until the final inning. 

In the sixth, Campbellsville sealed the win with two runs.

With a loss under their belt, Marion County bounced back to defeat Adair County’s all-star team on June 29. 

Behind by nine runs, Adair County scored its only run of in the top of the third. Marion County would answered with 10 runs of its own before holding Adair scoreless in the final inning. 

Marion County was scheduled to play Washington County on Tuesday evening, after press time.

11-12 softball 

Marion County 11-12-year-old  softball team is set to play in the Kentucky State Little League Tournament at 5 p.m. Saturday, July 5, against Russell County this Friday at Idle Hour Park in Springfield. 

The winner is scheduled to play again at 8 p.m. Monday, July 7. The loser will play at 4 p.m. Sunday, July 6.

The championship game is scheduled for 8 p.m. July 9. 

The state champion of the 11-12 softball tournament earns a berth in the Midwest Regional tournament set to begin July 19 in Indianapolis.       


9-10 baseball

In the heat of the  Little League District 5 Tournament, the Marion County 9-10-year-old baseball team won its first two games on June 28 and 29. 

They defeated Campbellsville on Saturday, and toppled Washington County on Sunday. Unfortunately, scores were unavailable as of press time.

On Tuesday after press time, Marion County was scheduled to play the winner of the Glasgow/Russell County.


9-10 softball

The 2014 Kentucky State Little League All-Star tournament begins at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 5, at Idle Hour Park in Springfield.

The Marion County 9-10-year-old softball team will be playing the winner of the District 2 tournament, either Nelson County or North Oldham.

If Marion County wins, the team will play Ashland at 2 p.m. Sunday July 6.

 If Marion County loses, it will play an elimination game at 4 p.m. Sunday, July 6.
