Thirteen teams competed in the second annual Dirt Bowl basketball tournament held at Cleaver Court Saturday. The event was hosted by the Marion County Youth Center as a fundraiser. Participation was free to players ages 8-18, and teams from Marion County and Nelson County participated in the tournament. The first and second place finishers in each division received trophies. The tournament was double elimination, and began at 11 a.m. and wrapped up at approximately 9:30 p.m. Saturday.
The teams were split into three divisions, 8-12-year-olds, 13-15-year-olds, and 16-18-year-olds. A Marion County team, the Lebanon Ballers, won the 8-12-year-old division, while teams from Nelson County won both the 13-15 and the 16-18- year-old divisions. Another Marion County team finished second in the 16-18-year-old group.
Jackie Furman, coordinator of this event, commented on the success this event has experienced over the past two years.
“This year’s Dirt Bowl was more successful than last year’s tournament with nearly 100 spectators attending,” Furman said. “The kids seemed to really enjoy the Dirt Bowl and played hard.”
Furman said this event will continue in the future based on the increasing turnouts.
According to Furman, a few of the Marion County teams have been invited to participate in a similar event that will be held in Bardstown in July.
