    Plans for the installation of a cafeteria in the basement of the Lebanon High School was fully discussed yesterday afternoon at a called meeting of the PTA. Action, however, was deferred to a date in the near future.

    Library circulation dips
    The September report of the Marion County Public Library, presented at yesterday’s meeting of the Woman’s Club by the librarian, Miss Mary A. Phillips, shows the customary circulation drop for the month in which children lay aside library volumes and take up school books. The month’s circulation totaled only 440 books, 214 adults and 226 juvenile.

    Marion County named “exemplary” district
    The Marion County School District has exceeded the state’s accountability goals for four consecutive cycles. As a result, the district has been named an “exemplary growth district” by the Kentucky Department of Education.
    Forty of the 175 public school districts in the state received this designation in 2006.
    One school in Marion County received a special recognition this year.

    New health officer
    Dr. T.I, Campbell, veteran Lebanon physician, has been appointed temporary health officer at Marion and Taylor counties, succeeding Dr. Genrose DeSimone. The latter, who has held the position since April 1960, has been granted a leave of absence in order to work toward the master’s degree in public health at the University of North Carolina. Dr. Campbell has been a practicing physician in Lebanon and Marion County for 54 years.

    Marion County apparently is on the verge of being declared a modified certified brucellosis-free area, which means that the incidence of the dreaded livestock disease in the county’s cattle population is below the figure required for such designation.

    Bicycle trip
    That Lester and James Spalding, sons of Mr. and Mrs. B.G. Spalding, were in Louisville Tuesday is scarcely news. But when they made the round trip all in one day on bicycle’s, that’s news that makes one’s legs ache to think about.
    During the course of the 134-mile jaunt, they occasionally stopped for a sandwich and soft drink, commenting that the trip wasn’t such a tough one. “Besides,” one of them added, “muscle is cheaper than gasoline.”

    Increase house membership
    Members of the United States House of Representatives may soon be increased for the first time in half a century, thanks chiefly to the persistence of a Lebanonian, Fourth District Congressman Frank L. Chelf.
    The Lebanon lawmaker, who announced nine months ago that he would seek to up membership of the lower house from 437 to 469, gained his first success Tuesday when his bill was referred to a judiciary sub-committee.

    Takes over school system
    Holy Cross Elementary School, long a part of the Marion County public school system, will become a parochial school at the beginning of the fall term. That announcement came yesterday from the Rev. F.M. Burch, pastor of Holy Cross Church, whose parish will operate the school in the future.
    The $100,000 building, which has housed the school since September, 1958, is already owned by the Holy Cross Parish.
