Conference focuses on getting more from alfalfa

For Clayton Geralds, the Kentucky Alfalfa Conference positively impacted his operation and future.
Geralds was a Hart County dairy farmer using alfalfa to feed his animals when he attended the 3rd annual Kentucky Alfalfa Conference in 1983. Within seven years, he sold his entire herd to grow alfalfa and other quality forages to sell to horse farmers. He now grows alfalfa and timothy hay on more than 600 acres and is considered by many as one of the best hay producers in the state.

Producers must report acreage to be eligible for programs

Filing an accurate acreage report for all crops and land uses, including failed acreage and prevented planting acreage, can prevent the loss of benefits for a variety of programs. The final date to certify wheat, oats, and barley is May 31. Failure to report acreage by this date could result in a late filed measurement service and fee to the producer.

2012 giant watermelon and pumpkin growing seminar is March 3

The Kentucky Giant Pumpkin Growers will be having their 2012 Giant Watermelon and Pumpkin Growing Seminar: March 3, at the Madison County Extension Office in Richmond.
Doors open at 12:30 p.m. and seminar will last from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Eastern Standard Time.
Cost is $10 per family.

Farmers invited to attend outreach program

The Kentucky State Police is partnering with the University of Kentucky and the Adair County Extension Office to provide a ‘Farmer Outreach’ forum that will forge enhanced relationships between law enforcement and the agricultural community.
The meeting is scheduled for Friday, Jan. 20, 2012 at 10 a.m. at the Adair County Extension Office located at 409 Fairground St., Columbia. Topics of discussion will include safety regulations, licensing requirements and driver qualifications.
