  • ‘Farmer of the Year’ applications now accepted

    The 2013 Kentucky Farm Bureau (KFB) “Farmer of the Year” application process is now open, and the organization is seeking the Commonwealth’s finest nominees for this prestigious award.
    Eligibility and guidelines are included with the application, and can be downloaded at kyfb.com/federation/. All applications must be postmarked by July 1.
    The winner will be announced at the organization’s 2013 state annual meeting in Louisville on Dec. 6.

  • Marion County home to two Certified Roadside Farm Markets

    Marion County is home to two of the 103 markets across the Commonwealth accepted into the 2013 Kentucky Farm Bureau Certified Roadside Farm Market Program. The Marion County members are: Serenity Farm Alpacas and Williams Country Market.
    In joining the Kentucky Farm Bureau Certified Roadside Farm Market Program, these markets have committed to offering quality products and service to their customers. Their acceptance by Farm Bureau tells customers that they meet the highest standards of quality, freshness, and marketing appeal.

    Amid reports that the economy is recovering slower than many would like and that too many Kentuckians aren’t as healthy as they should be, it would be nice if there was something that could help with both of those issues.
    Fortunately, there is.
    Gardening, and more specifically, container gardening, is a way almost anyone can have healthy foods for a fraction of the cost of buying them at the store.

    If you are looking for some recipes to use your garden fresh vegetables, Susan Spicer offered a few examples from “Susan’s Kitchen.”

    Mexican Rice
    2 T. butter or margarine
    1 large onion, chopped
    1 green peppers, chopped
    2 cloves of garlic, minced
    1 cup uncooked rice
    1 tomato, peeled and chopped
    2 cups of chicken broth
    1 t. cumin
    Salt to taste

  • Heart of Kentucky Farm, Home and Garden Show is Saturday

    The Marion County Chamber of Commerce will host its annual Heart of Kentucky Farm, Home and Garden Show at 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday April 6, and from 11 a.m. to 4 pm., Sunday, April 7.
    Katlin Schwartz with the Kentucky Beef Council will hold a cooking display at 1 p.m. on Saturday. On Sunday, singer Allison Stafford will be performing from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.
