Let’s eat some carrots! I’ve always liked them, and my kids do too. My mom fixed carrots all the time when I was growing up, plus she always had carrot sticks in the fridge for munching.
She had a dog when I was little, a big fat dachshund named Herman. He was always on a diet, and he liked carrots, so lots of those carrot sticks went to him.
These two carrot side dishes I got from Mom’s recipe box. They are very simple to make, and very delicious. And for dessert? What else? Carrot cake!

I was saddened to read of the recent passing of Linda Allison-Lewis, cooking columnist in Kentucky Living, the magazine from the Inter County Energy Co-op, and the author of “Kentucky’s Best - Fifty Years of Great Recipes.”
Though Linda and I never met in person, we talked on the phone many times about  recipes. When I wrote my own cookbook, she helped me by writing a very nice article about it, accompanied by a picture of my donkeys and me.

Here are two cool summer salads you will really like, one chicken and one broccoli.  I’ve featured them both in this column before, and they are in my cookbook.  They are recipes I return to again and again.
The Hawaiian Chicken Salad recipe was given to me by my friend Pat Colley (mother of Andy, local radio celebrity.)  I made it this past weekend because my daughters Rachel and Stevie were there, and they both love it.  It’s really delicious, and this recipe makes a lot, so it’s great for a pot-luck.
