  • Barkley and Vicki Courtwright celebrated 50 years of marriage with a trip to Pigeon Forge, Tenn. They were married on Dec. 31, 1963 in Livingston, Tenn.
    Vicki was the former Vicki Hardesty. They have three children, David of Jessietown, Mark of Campbellsville, and Susan of Charlotte, N.C. They have seven grandchildren.

    Zoey Virginia Dudley celebrated her 1st birthday Dec. 18, 2013. She is the daughter of Derek and Alethea Dudley of Mundfordville. Grandparents are Katherine Bogikes of Albany, David Goeson of Edmonton and Nancy and Gleason Dudley of Bradfordsville.

    William Dye celebrated his third birthday on Dec. 24, 2013. His parents are Billy and Christy Dye of Lebanon.
     

  • Bruce Lee and Jeri Jo Bright of New Hope announce the birth of a 6-pound, 14-ounce son, Bryce Axis Lee, born Nov. 26, 2013 at Spring View Hospital, Lebanon.
    Maternal grandparents are Jerry Bright and Beverly Durham and the late Sonny Durham, all of Lebanon.
    Paternal grandparents are Earl and Donna Lee of Raywick.
    Great-grandparents are Cecilia Thomas of Lebanon and Joe and Maudie Mitchell of Raywick.

  •  While the winter slowdown has not yet happened it does seem to be around the corner. Or, is that just wishful thinking? 

    At any rate, winter is a time to regroup and plan for another year for the farm. We have some serious infrastructure planning to do thanks to a grant from Animal Welfare Approved, which will allow us to add some fox proof fencing for our free-ranging laying hens; and some improvements to our sheep pastures that will allow for more organized rotational grazing and sorting.

    My grandma and my mother always told me you had to eat black-eyed peas on New Year’s Day to get good luck for the coming year. I remember asking Mom what would happen if you didn’t eat them. She said she didn’t know because she’d never tried it!

    Mention the smells of Christmas and most people have little trouble ticking off their favorites: the perfume of evergreen, the citrusy smell of fruit in the Christmas stockings, cinnamon spice tea brewing, the aroma of gingerbread cookies and pumpkin bread baking.
    So popular are these smells that they’ve been packaged in Christmas aerosol sprays, candles, and refresher oils.
    Not so with the New Year.
