  • My grandmother on my dad's side is often in my thoughts, especially this time of year.

She was born Blanche Ruth Baum in 1893 in Rochester, Ind. She kept the Blanche a secret from everyone. I didn't know that was her first name until she died and Dad was writing the obituary.

She was the only child of Ollie and Sadie, who owned and operated a general store, Baum's Grocery.

She told me many times about spending time in the store, playing or doing her homework. When she was old enough, she started clerking after school.

  • When I first bought land and moved to Kentucky in 1973, I lived in Taylor County on Tallow Creek Road, which is closer to Lebanon than Campbellsville. So, I usually did my grocery shopping and such in Lebanon.

  • The Ham Days Treasure Hunt, sponsored by Time Warner Cable, is underway.

    Clues will be given daily.

On Saturday (if the "treasure" hasn't been found), clues will be given every hour on the hour over the radio and on the Bluegrass Cellular Main Stage.

The final clue will be given at 1 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 26.

The winner of the Time Warner Cable Treasure Hunt will receive a country ham and a gift basket donated by Time Warner Cable.

  • Don't fret - our moss-covered hero is still doing what he does best.

The last time I hung out with the Turtle Man, Ernie Brown Jr., it was too cold for a turtle hunt. Luckily, the Turtle Man and his entourage remembered me and invited me along recently.

I enjoyed my time with the Turtle Man last time but it's hard to get a full assessment of the Turtle Man without seeing him in action. If you've seen his videos and were impressed, let me tell you he does not disappoint in person. It's even better.

  • Since this column will run on 9-9-09, I decided to feature recipes for nine things to do with a yellow cake mix.

These are all very tasty and easy recipes-see if you can find one you like!

  • Here are a couple of delicious Texas recipes I got from my Aunt Marge years ago.

The Texas Caviar is a terrific salsa-like dip that I guarantee your guests will love. Serve it with tortilla chips, corn or flour, and you'll be surprised how quickly it disappears.

The Southwestern Casserole is easy and delicious, a real family-pleaser.

  • Chester, a Pomeranian mix, is almost 1 year old. He will be very loyal and protective of his owner. Chester is crate trained and loves to play but would not be good around small children.
